What eGFR is — and the 2021 race-free update.
Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) approximates how much blood your kidneys filter per minute, calculated from serum creatinine, age, and sex. Creatinine is a muscle-breakdown product the kidneys clear, so a higher creatinine implies lower filtration. In 2021 the CKD-EPI equation was revised to remove a race coefficient that had systematically over-estimated kidney function in Black patients; this calculator uses that race-free 2021 version (Inker et al.).
A single eGFR is not a diagnosis. Chronic kidney disease is staged on both filtration and evidence of kidney damage — most importantly albumin in the urine (uACR), which an eGFR alone misses. Creatinine also rises transiently with dehydration, high-protein meals, hard exercise, and creatine supplements, so confirm a low value on a repeat draw, ideally paired with uACR.
